Horror's Black Female Characters In Special Effects Makeup

I love practical/makeup effects. If I could afford an additionally expensive hobby turned trade, I would go to makeup school and make sliding scale dough working on local micro-budget films and dazzling folks during Halloween. So it's always a treat for me when a horror film and the artists behind it take their time in creating some impressive and/or ghoulish looking characters as a part of the visual experience. I'm a child of the 80's where imaginative effects were at their peak, before CGI (computer generated imagery) virtually took everything over.

There are pros and cons in the practical vs. CGI debate. CGI allows you to do more fantastical stuff that you only ever saw maybe in animation before but takes away from the 'real look', creativity/imagination, and let's be honest, employment that practical can provide. I think in today's terms, there should be a healthy balance of both for this reason.

Keeping in stride with giving props to women of color a little left of center, here are some characters in creatively, disturbing, fashionable makeup effects. I love it when women are game for getting a little ugly.

Jenny Mills in Sleepy Hollow (2014)
Katrina in Vamp (1986)
Emerald in Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned (2008)
Temptress in Def By Temptation (1990)
Rosemary in Demons (1985)
Olivia in Evil Dead (2013)
Mariana in Howling II: ... Your Sister is a Werewolf (1985)
