Thoughtful commentary on interracial romance in horror films I'm going to strongly guess is non-existent. However, the serendipity of Jamie Broadnax, creator of the site Black Girl Nerds brought a discussion of it here back in January. Considering her focus on the "Lovers Vow" segment of Tales From The Darkside: The Movie (1990), it was the ethereal Rae Dawn Chong's Carola that captured both myself and Jamie's fascination in conjunction with her relationship to James Remar's Preston. A Black woman and a white guy. I first saw this movie when I was about 8 or 9 and at that point, never saw a pairing quite like that before. True story.
As Black female spectators, I will speak for myself when I say that I wholeheartedly love the entire spectrum of Black women's lived existence. It has never been simple, as much as people would love to make it so. What makes deviations like the visible implications of a romance between a Black woman with someone of a different race in dark tales could speak magnitudes about how we deal with the subject as Black women outside of these narratives; from around the coffee table 'girl talk' to colloquiums.
I cannot pinpoint what it is about horror films that makes this topic unique. It remains a very underdeveloped thought and hardly a trend, but something I look at a lot more on the periphery since Jamie's article was published. If I were to stay firm on anything, it is that this topic further insists on a Black woman's existence in horror films that our mark is worthy of mention and memory. That our desires run deep and are bold and relentless. Which is after all, why this space exists.
Below are some pairings that I've collected thus far. I truly hope Jamie continues to discuss this as a series to unpack some questions and more thoughts on the topic.
