Black Women in Genre Television: 2013 In Review

2013 (ironically enough) seems to be the year of ground-breaking television in regards representations of Black women on both network and cable. Although a multi-array of multi-ethnic characters is still a challenge that has yet to be fulfilled in this medium, we can not ignore the great strides made where ten some odd years prior these actresses could've easily been banished to heavily minor roles or not even considered for the lead.

Here are three characters and actresses in particular who are doing phenomenal things for representation of Black women on genre television.

Nichole Beharie as Abbie Mills on FOX's Sleepy Hollow

Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau on FX's American Horror Story: Coven

Danai Gurira as Michonne on AMC's The Walking Dead
